 Music Marketing

About a week ago my peers and I were given the task to research artists and their companies in the music industry according to a specific genre.


The genre my group and I received was the genre of pop.

I was responsible for researching Beyonce and Malcolm Todd.

Planning Process


As part of the research process, we were required to plan out what each one of us would mention about our artists and companies. I decided to choose these two artists because they are very different. Beyonce has been a very well-known artists that has been in the industry for decades. On the other hand, Malcolm Todd has only been in the industry for a couple of years. Both of these artists use very different strategies/ approaches when it comes to promoting their music and their image.

One thing that I did in order to plan myself appropriately was to watch as many music videos from each artists as possible. I wanted to see just how much more different they are from each other. I wanted to see the different styles that each of the artists had. The company I decided to research Columbia records. This company has a wide variety of musicians of different backgrounds and different styles.







This process helped me identify what I wanted to research and how deep I could go into that research.



Research


Our teacher provided us with charts where we had to fill in the four categories for our research: Brief History, Target Audience/ Brand Identity, Digital Marketing and Distribution, and Non-Digital and Marketing Distribution.


For Beyonce, I had much to mention since she has been around for longer. Indeed, Beyonce is a very talented artist, but she is an even more talented business women. Beyonce owns a wide variety of businesses and partnerships. Her companies all vary from hair-care to a whiskey. She uses different mediums and strategies in order to all of her products. 

One example that I included was the promotion of her whiskey company Sir Davis. For this company, Beyonce uses Instagram as her platform and she shares pictures of her posing with a cup of whiskey. The quantity of these posts catches her fans eyes and lures them into investing and buying the product.


However, for Malcolm Todd I did not have much to talk about since he is newer. Malcolm uses more modern marketing strategies in order to continue to build his fandom.

One example I provided was the use of TikTok trends.

TikTok has become a very popular platform to promote music. Malcolm and other artists create videos that has their music as audio. They post the song they are about to release a couple of days before the release date. They release a new video everyday. The more people hear a just a bit of the song it makes them desperate which keeps them waiting. This encourages pre-saving the song/album/EP that is about to be released. In this scenario, Malcolm adapts to the trends and costumes of the younger generation in order to build a younger audience.



Reflection

I believe I did a really good job at researching these artists and their strategies. One thing I would have liked to improve upon is finding a more information about Malcolm Todd. Overall, I am proud of the final product and I enjoyed researching these very talented individuals.
