Research post- Streaming vs. Cinema

As you all may now, films have become available to viewers around the world through streaming platforms. It has become extremely popular to just stream your favorite movie and sav money on tickets to the movie theater. However, movie theaters allow transport you to the world that you are watching. The low lights, big screen, and crisp audio allow you emerge into the film. Whether that is flying around with blue aliens or traveling through the underground of NYC while eating pizza, theaters allow you to be present in the moment.

In this post I will be talking about the difference between movie theaters and seeing which is more convenient for movie-goers.

 Avatar: Fire and Ash- 2025

Movie Theaters

Movie theaters have been around ever since the 1890's and they started to thrive in the 1920's. First showing black and white silent films, to black and white films with audio, to then progressing to colored films. Movie theaters have progressed and are now big and exciting. Movie theaters include delicious snacks that you can enjoy while watching your film as well. However, ticket prices to go to a movie theaters have increased drastically. From $6.55 in 2006 to $11.31 20 years later. These price increases have been scaring away costumers because they do not want to pay as much money now a days, especially after the 2019 pandemic.

Nevertheless, audiences still visit movie theaters since they have more advanced visual technology than your average TV screen. For example, many movies are starting to be film in IMAX, an 18x24 meter screen (on average) that shows visuals way bigger. It really does transport you to another world. Even talking about it now, I can remember the first time I went to watch a film on IMAX and feeling like I was still stuck in that universe even after the film ended. This was in 2017 when I had recently moved to the U.S. I had the opportunity to go to THE Disney Springs AMC theater and watch the well-known movie Coco on that screen. When the movie was over I was really confused because I felt like I was helping Miguel himself get out from the world of the dead.

As corny as it sounds movie theaters are a magical experience that is unfortunately dying due to the convenience of streaming services.

Streaming Services

Streaming services started in the 2000s and since then they have drastically changed the media sphere. One of the biggest streaming service pioneers is none other than Netflix. Netflix was released in 2005 as a DVD-by-mail rental service becoming Blockbuster's sworn enemy. They both battled until Netflix took over and started leading Blockbuster through the mud. Two year after it's release it started to transform into a streaming service. Now there are over 200 streaming services that provide audiences their favorite movies without having to spend $11 every time they want to watch a movie.

Audiences pay convenient monthly/yearly subscriptions to watch movies and tv shows for free. They just pay and watch from the comfort of their home. If they did not catch to watch a move in theaters they can just simply watch it on a streaming service.

It is convenient, fast, and cheaper than going to movie theaters. However, the quality of sound and visuals aren't the same then those in movie theaters thus the lack of "magic".

I enjoy both of these resources and although streaming services may be more convenient, watching a film in a movie theater is like no other. Hopefully, in the future, we find a good balance between both mediums and where we can enjoy the magic of cinema and the comfort of streaming.
